Amed

Amed is a string of quiet fishing villages along Bali's northeastern coast, best known internationally for its black sand beaches, world-class diving at the USAT Liberty wreck in nearby Tulamben, and a distinctly unhurried pace of life. It is one of Bali's best-kept secrets for yoga teacher training — serene, scenic, and refreshingly uncommercialized. The drive to Amed takes around two hours from Ubud but the shift in atmosphere is profound: volcanic mountain slopes tumble directly into the sea, traditional jukung fishing boats dot the shore, and the night sky is among the clearest on the island. Several dedicated yoga retreat centres in the area run YTT programmes that make full use of this extraordinary setting. Training in Amed suits students who want something genuinely away from the tourism circuit, who value proximity to nature above café culture and nightlife, and who are happy to be part of a small, tight-knit cohort. It is particularly popular for Yin, restorative, and meditation-heavy programmes that benefit from the area's inherent stillness.
